Zum ersten Mal wurde diese Produktion 1967 anlässlich des 10. Todestages des berühmten Dirigenten Toscanini in der Scala aufgeführt. Anschließend folgten Vorstellungen in der ganzen Welt, darunter Moskau, Montreal und New York. Die außergewöhnliche Bestzung der Solisten, darunter Keontyn Price, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Fiorenza Cossotto und der junge Luciano Pavarotti machen diese Aufzeichnung nicht nur zu einem musikalischen sondern auch zu einem visuellen Highlight. Mit der Wahl des Regiesseurs für diese Produktion bewies Herbert von Karajan schon früh sein Gespühr für den innovation Film - Hernri-Georges Clouzot, der Regiesseur von Filmen wie " Quai des Orfvres" oder " Wages of Fear".
